Samsung is a huge firm who sells a vast majority of products ranging from simple household items, to smartphones, to a family car, they are one of the internationally recognized industry leaders in the world of technology and secured a place in top 10 Global brands, in this article we are going to go through some of the unknown facts about this conglomerate that will surely blow your mind.
Headquarters
They have their headquarters in the south Korea called as Samsung digital city this is the place where their new galaxy smart phones are designed and where new technologies are conceptualized. Their headquarters is big and they have around 320,000 employees as per the stats of 2021.
They have a policy called as work smart which means that their employees can work for how long they want, until they feel productive until 6 :00 pm.
By having this much employees they make around 400,000 dollars per minute.
Fun fact: They have a silent sound chamber in their HQ which cancels outer sound completely for pin drop silence this is actually needed for making the iconic ringtones, dial pad sounds and alert sounds.
True depth of Samsung
Their company is so big so it planned to split their company into several sub companies like Samsung constructions, Samsung heavy industries and Samsung military department, Samsung life insurance, Samsung electronics etc... Which is where we start to see the true depth of the company.
Samsung heavy industries in the world's biggest ship making industry. Samsung military department makes tanks for the south Korean army. They are also said to be working on a smart tank.
Fun fact, the world famous and tallest building Burj Khalifa was built by the Samsung construction company.
Samsung also sells non retail products like 108-megapixel cameras, parts of semi-conductors, displays, display technologies, SSDs and lot more to other companies such as xiaomi, Apple, Google etc...
Samsung electronics has sold around 2 billion smartphones around the world. It does not include tablets, laptops, or their non smart phone venture. just the galaxy branded smartphones. Thats around the half of the world's population but still the smartphone business is only 20 % of their company. Which makes us ponder about the rest of the 80%.
Giving wide range of products is the reason why Samsung alone accounts for 17% of the GDP of South Korea
To manage a company this vast, they have a total 2 CEO’s namely, “Han, Jong Hee” and “Kyung, Kye Hyun”.
How it all started
Just like most of the world leading firms, Samsung too has a humble back story.
They are an old company, they first started as a grocery and sea food store in 1935 but their first computer was made only 30 years after the company started in 1970. since then, they gone deeply into the computer world.
Naming reason
With the word “Samsung” there is a bit of a word play associated with it.
“Sam” means 3 and “sung” means stars. This is to convey than their company will be everlasting like stars. Even their logo had 3 stars in them until 20 years ago when they replaced it with this galaxy themed logo as we all know now. Even their entire smartphone sub company is known as galaxy.
Helping from other brands and helping other brands
Samsung has close relations with other brands too, as we already know Samsung is dependent on google for Android OS, used in their tablets and smartphones, Google is partially dependent on Samsung because, as More Samsung phones sell, Android gets more popular and earns revenue. Also, Samsung helped Google for creating their in-house tensor chip that is used in Google Pixel 6 and 6 pro.
Until iPhone 4, Samsung was the chip maker for the iPhone. Samsung makes the displays for iPhones till date. We can easily observe that even though Apple and Samsung are competing brands, one couldn’t exist without the other.
Samsung expands partnership with Microsoft to tailor apps for its foldable Smartphone lineup (Z fold and Z flip series)
Samsung also partnered with AMD to help in the graphics department of Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chip used in S22 series.
