Chat GPT vs Bing AI - The battle of the chatterboxes

GPT – Generative Pre-trained Transformer is a deep learning algorithm for building NLP (Natural Language Processing) tasks - developed by Open AI. This technology since its initiation has made significant strides in the development of AI by enabling it to perform language translation, answering queries and generating human like text.  

Both Chat GPT (from Open AI), and Bing search/ Bing AI (from Microsoft) are chatbots developed using this algorithm. While Chat GPT’s free version uses GPT version 3.5 and Bing uses GPT 4; both are created with a motto to “serve and assist” the users by interacting with them in human-like conversations, create, edit, summarize, explain, and translate texts, and answer user queries.  

On the surface, Chat GPT and Bing might feel similar, but they have certain characteristics and peculiarities that distinguish one from another. This article focuses on testing the capabilities of the two AI’s along different categories and concluding the peculiarities of both.  

CHAT GPT VS BING AI

USER INTERFACE AND USER EXPERIENCE 

Chat GPT gets a fully-fledged, neat, minimal and ad free website with options for both light and dark themes. It has 2 main panels in its main page, the right-hand side is where you chat with the bot, while the left-hand side consists of all your saved chat history and settings. Chat GPT can be accessed via any browser from any device.  

Bing Ai is not a fully-fledged website, but rather present as a feature inside Bing search engine below the search bar. Instead of having a centralized place to access Bing chat – different features of the AI are scattered across the edge browser and the Bing search engine with little to no continuity in the UI design. With the downside being – it can only be accessed through the Edge browser and cannot be accessed from anywhere else.  

Thus, Chat GPT gets the upper hand in terms of Ui design.  

INFORMATION  

Both chat GPT and Bing AI use the same primary corpus of data for its knowledge thus both can inform, educate, and explain about your questions, carry natural conversations with its users in a pretty similar way.  

However, Chat GPT has limited knowledge of the events after September 2021. Meanwhile Bing, primarily being a search engine, has access to more data which it uses as a secondary corpus. Thus, questions about the current affairs and real time data are answered by Bing while Chat GPT apologizes for the oblivion about the topic.  

Things like lyrics for songs and music recognition are also better with Bing.  

Thus, Microsoft Bing has a slight Edge over chat GPT.  

MATHEMATICAL INTELLIGENCE  

Both Bing and Chat GPT can easily handle raw mathematical calculations like addition, subtraction, exponents etc...  

But word problems on complex topics and competency-based questions are better handled by Chat GPT. 

Below is a problem on Arithmetic progression queried to both bots similarly. While both proved the answer somehow, Bing missed a few vital steps and misunderstood the question, while Chat GPT easily handles the question and answers with ample explanations.  

So, Chat GPT is better at solving math problems than Bing.  

NATURAL CONVERSATIONS 

Both the chatbots have the potential to conduct natural and intuitive conversations, often Chat GPT feels more natural than Bing.  

This is mainly because of the limitations in the lengths of conversations with Bing. Due to the criticism received from social media for Bing occasionally being vulgar and threatening, Microsoft limited the chatbot’s talkativeness in its public release. Thus, users are limited to only receiving 15 replies from Bing on conversing a particular topic. And if you need to chat more, you must clear the chat and start over as if you are talking to a completely different person. Due to the lack of continuity in the conversation, Bing feels more limited than Chat GPT.  

Occasionally Bing also gets offended and requests us to start over the conversation.  

Thus, making Chat GPT a better companion for your ‘small talks.’  

CODING 

Both the chatbots are excellent programmers also. Both Bing and Chat GPT can create, edit, and correct buggy code. You might have already seen many people creating apps using chat GPT which works successfully. While both the bots are well versed in most of the programming languages, Chat GPT is more reliable as Bing sometimes says that it cannot create code for you.   

PRICE  

Bing chat is fully free while chat GPT has both a free and a premium version. The free version of Bing is like free version of chat GPT, with the only difference being that chat GPT uses an older version of GPT.   

The paid version of chat GPT is rather expensive at $20 USD, which offers the latest GPT version along with priority to paid users in times of high demand.  

CONCLUSION 

Both Chat GPT and Bing chat have their own pros and cons limited by their design, while Chat GPT provides more natural conversation than Bing. Bing produces more up to date information.   

Though I personally use chatGPT often than Bing, your choice depends upon the task you want to do at the time of use; if I want to have friendly long conversations to pass time, I will pick ChatGPT, if I want to know about any current affairs, I will pick Bing. As both are universal and free to use, you do not have to permanently pick one over the other, you can juggle between both to get the best of both worlds.
